The writing is on the wall that Kevin Durant has likely played his last game as a member of the Phoenix Suns, with ESPN insider Brian Windhorst recently going as far as saying that he's "98 percent sure" the 15-time All-Star will be traded by the franchise over the offseason.

Why Would The Phoenix Suns Trade Kevin Durant?
It was no secret across the Association that Phoenix was shopping Durant ahead of the February trade deadline, what with the team severely underperforming en route to a 36-46 finish which was just out of reach of a play-in tournament spot. As far as assets are concerned in order to rejuvenate the roster, even at the age of 36, Durant is the most valuable trade piece Phoenix currently has. Bradley Beal has a no-trade clause built into his contract, and Devin Booker is locked in through the 2027-28 season on a hefty salary, and considering he's long been the face of the Suns, the front office won't be in any sort of rush to move him.
Phoenix initially acquired Durant from the Brooklyn Nets as part of a three-team deal which cost Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, four unprotected first-round picks, and a first-round pick swap. It's difficult to imagine anything closely resembling such a package coming the Suns' way years later, although it was reported back in March that the ideal return for Durant would be three first rounders and a young piece.
Which Potential Destinations Make The Most Sense For Kevin Durant?
Here are three teams Durant should consider asking for a trade to, being under the assumption that he'll play a hefty role in deciding where he ultimately ends up.
Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets managed to lock down the No. 2 seed in the tough Western Conference with a 52-30 win-loss record before fizzling out in the opening round by losing to the Golden State Warriors in seven games. They scored 3.4 fewer points per 100 possessions in that series than they did throughout the 2024-25 campaign, struggling to figure out who would be the No. 1 offensive option most nights between the likes of All-Star Alperen Sengun or a struggling Jalen Green.
Bringing Durant on would solve a lot of those concerns moving forward, as he's still capable of being a top scoring option after averaging 26.6 points on 52.7/43/83.9 shooting splits. The issue, though, is that Sengun, Green, Amen Thompson, Tari Eason, Reed Sheppard, and Jabari Smith Jr. are all under the age of 25, and the Rockets' front office may be reluctant to blow up that group and hope Durant can lead what remains to a championship in such a short window to do so.
Minnesota Timberwolves
A second-straight Western Conference finals appearance ended once again in a five-game elimination for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who could use someone of Durant's talents to alleviate some of the pressure on rising superstar Anthony Edwards. In fact, Edwards has long stated that Durant has been a basketball inspiration of his, with the two being fortunate enough to play alongside each other for Team USA at the Paris Olympic Games which culminated in a gold medal.
With a new ownership group in place, rumors circulating that Minnesota will try to pursue Durant after making a significant push in February, along with the team having the second-shortest odds of any potential landing spot, a union of Edwards and Durant in Minneapolis isn't so farfetched. It wouldn't guarantee the Timberwolves a title, mind you, but it may be enough to get the team over the hump and into the Finals.
Dallas Mavericks
While they went about it in a precarious way, the Dallas Mavericks are evidently looking to win their first championship since 2011 sooner rather than later, with a new-look core of Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving (out with a torn ACL), and 35-year-old Klay Thompson looking to maximize their remaining years.
Durant would fit the mold of the aging Avengers general manager Nico Harrison has assembled, and his arrival could help heal any lingering wounds created by Luka Doncic being sent packing to the Los Angeles Lakers.
